BlackPlanet.com is an interactive website which focuses on issues and
concerns related to the African diaspora. The BlackPlanet website, launched on
September 1, 1999, has over 16 million members. The website often features
advertisements from many Fortune 500 companies. BlackPlanet allows its members
to exchange notes, and to engage in real-time chat. Its executive director is
Omar Wasow, an internet analyst who appears frequently on radio and
television. The Pentagon banned soldier access to BlackPlanet, along with
Myspace, YouTube and other such sites from military computers in May 2007, to
conserve network bandwidth. However, soldiers can still access the site from
personal computers.
